Who it's for

For trainers whose rooms push back

For in-house trainers and senior facilitators who run sessions for senior rooms that need convincing. Your company pays for your seat.

  • In-house trainers

You run programmes inside your organisation, for rooms that don't always want to be there.

  • Senior facilitators

You lead sessions for senior people who need convincing before they will change anything.

  • “We’ve tried this before.”

If you have heard this from the room, you will practise your answer on the day.

  • “Our people are different.”

The real lines trainers hear are the material for the afternoon.

What you'll work on

Three things that make a session stay

Greg has run this day's core session about 100 times.

  1. Keep the room with you

See a session from your trainees' side, how a strong session is built so people stay involved from the first minute to the last, and how fast a room makes up its mind about the person at the front.

  2. Stay steady when they push back

Four moves for the moment someone pushes back. You don't give in. You don't snap back. You work to keep the room with you.

  3. Give the learning a way back to work

How to end a session so people walk out with something to do, not just notes. Then you try it on yourself.

What you take home

Leave with a plan, not just notes

  • A plan for where the learning goes first One real trainee, one move, the first sentence you'll say, and a date.
  • Four moves for pushback For the moment someone says “We’ve tried this before.”
  • Practice under pressure From the hot seat: you run a short session while someone tries to pull it off course.
  • A 60-minute online clinic, 30 days later Bring one real pushback story. We look at what happened, together.

Morning from 9:30

  1. See it from their side

What your trainees feel when a session works, and when it does not.

  2. What keeps a room with you

How a strong session is built, so people stay involved from the first minute to the last.

  3. The first few minutes

An exercise on how fast a room makes up its mind about the person at the front.

  4. Four moves for pushback

What to do in the moment someone pushes back. You don't give in. You don't snap back. You work to keep the room with you.

Afternoon until 5:00

  1. Real lines, small groups

Practise on what trainers really hear: “We’ve tried this before.” “Our people are different.”

  2. The hot seat

One person runs a short session. Someone else tries to pull it off course. The group watches, then talks it through.

  3. Make it last past five

How to end a session so people walk out with something to do, not just notes. Then you try it on yourself.

  4. Before you leave

Pick one real trainee, one move, the first sentence you'll say, and a date. You leave with a plan for where the learning goes first.

30 days later

  1. A 60-minute online clinic

Bring one real pushback story. We look at what happened, together.
